Could you help to teach Refugees in Ghana?

Our latest teaching placement in the ever-popular Ghana involves teaching English in the Buduburam refugee camp near Accra.

As one of the most stable countries in Africa, Ghana has become a haven for refugees from war torn areas such as Liberia, Sierra Leone and now Côte d' Ivoire.

Buduburam is huge, the largest refugee camp in Ghana - covering over 140 acres and overcrowded with 40,000 refugees - 4 times its original intended capacity. With no electricity, running water or sewage treatment conditions are currently deteriorating.

However, education is one way to help improve the future of Buduburam's inhabitants and indeed structure their daily lives. With a handful of schools, 9000 children and only 200 teachers it is a huge challenge. Projects Abroad has teamed up with Buduburam to provide volunteer teachers to take some of the classes and assist in improving the prospects of the young children forced to live there.

With or without previous teaching experience you are welcome to offer your help. This is a challenging placement, but it will be very rewarding for those with dedication and determination. Volunteers with experience in occupational therapy and child psychology are also needed. Although the refugee children are now in relative safety of a camp, they still have to deal with the horrors of their recent past. One child has to attend school with another student whose father killed his father during the conflict in Liberia. The scars are still very real.

Let us know if you'd like to be placed here. Buduburam needs volunteers now!
