Volunteers Receive First Aid Training Abroad

First Aid course in Sri Lanka

Alex Harris first joined Projects Abroad as a medical volunteer in India with Projects Abroad. However, Alex, who is a fully qualified first-aid instructor, impressed us all with his enthusiasm and willingness to be more involved.

Projects Abroad offered for Alex to travel to six of our destinations to provide basic First Aid training to the volunteers and to give some of the overseas staff a refresher course. Over a period of two months Alex traveled to India, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru.

The basic course takes 2 to 3 hours and includes; the Practising the recovery positioninitial response to a conscious and unconscious casualty, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), serious bleeding, choking in adults and children, heart attacks, burns, fractures, shock and poisoning.

This was the ideal opportunity to encourage volunteers to participate in an activity that would benefit them further and add to their experience. The feedback from the staff and volunteers was excellent, and whilst we hope they won’t need to put their new skills to test, it is good to know that many of our volunteers are more prepared to deal with a problem if one arises.
